When the McCain campaign started the narrative that Barack Obama was too “presumptuous” and thought too highly of themselves, a lot of us heard that as a pretty clear dog whistle. Apparently, some Republicans decided that was a bit too subtle and decided to go straight to calling the Obamas uppity.

Gov. Sarah Palin gave her first big speech last night, her introduction to the national political world. I don’t think that anyone really knew what to expect. She cleared the first big hurdle of making it through the speech with decent delivery. I think a lot of people were expecting it to be an awful speech, or for her to flub all of her lines, but I thought she’d do fine. Pam Spaulding caught this picture of Sarah Palin displayed on the CNN.com frontpage. I realize that Sarah Palin is probably waving with an extended arm but part of being a public speaker in a media rich environment is to pay attention to details. And refraining from making anything that could look like a Nazi salute in a still image would be a good detail to pay attention to.

The Republicans have largely closed ranks around Sarah Palin, defending her from outside forces that are either trying to scandalize her personal life or who smell blood in the water politically.
