MIT Offers Free Online Courses in Multiple Disciplines
RT mentioned in the comments section of the Stanford University post that MIT has been offering free online coursework for years. I wasn’t aware of that before last night so I’m going to do a post for anyone else that might have been in the dark.
MITOpenCourseware has lecture videos (with notes), assignments and exams included for each course. No registration is required and you obviously receive no college credits for your work nor can you communicate with the professor. MIT offers courses (1800 in total) across a wide range of disciplines. Some of the classes are a few years old but that shouldn’t matter in most cases. Date of creation is indicated next to each course.
You can find an easy to navigate master list of classes here. The following departments are represented:
Athletics, Physical Education and Recreation (not sure how that one works online. Wii?)
Civil and Environmental Engineering
Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences
Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Foreign Languages and Literatures
Health Sciences and Technology
Materials Science and Engineering
Nuclear Science and Engineering

Wow this is interesting. I wonder how well folks do without the external pressure, but still, good to test the waters before plunging into a taught course.
I think anyone that’s going to seriously look into taking a MIT level course online for no college credit is going to be fairly motivated to learn the material in it. I’ve got a list of about twenty courses I want to do by just glancing through the list. I may never leave the house again.
