“Hussein” Sheriff Under Fed Investigation
I posted earlier this week about the comments made by the sheriff of Lee County, Florida during a speech at a Sarah Palin rally. Sheriff Mike Scott, in uniform, called the Democratic presidential candidate “Barack Hussein Obama”. He did not call either Palin or John McCain by their full name. This selective usage combined with the setting of a Republican rally in the deep South makes the intent pretty clear.
The local ACLU and NAACP chapters are demanding apologies and citizens are calling the sheriff’s office by the hundreds to complain. But Scott’s largest problem is a looming federal investigation into whether it was legal for him to make those comments:
A complaint sent to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel alleges that Scott violated the Hatch Act because his agency receives federal dollars, and Scott was engaging in political activity while on duty and in uniform. Erica S. Hamrick, senior attorney for the agency, said in an e-mail Tuesday that an investigation was being opened. Neither she nor her office could be reached for further comment Tuesday.
Sheriff Scott stands by his comment and says that there were no implications behind it, which suggests he’s been living in a cave this election season. Some icing on the ignorance cake:
“I just wanted to use his full name,” Scott said. “And frankly, if this is such a hot-button issue, he, as a Harvard lawyer, could have changed it if he didn’t like it.”
Take note, anyone who has even a vaguely ethnic sounding name: if you want to run for a political office, you’d better switch it to something American like Tommy or Roger if you don’t want to be portrayed as a Muslim/terrorist/”other”. Screw your family heritage! It’s hard for the voters to think.
Sadly, Sheriff Scott is actually a picture of sanity compared to his predecessor, John McDougall:
Former Sheriff John McDougall twice appeared on the “Today Show,” once denouncing abortion and again to warn tourists away from Lee County, saying it wasn’t safe. In 2000, he was arrested after he left office, when he tried bringing water to dying hospice patient Terri Schiavo in Pinellas Park.
I’ve lived in Fort Myers (within Lee County) almost all of my life and when newcomers to the area- tricked by the large number of Northerners inside the city limits-remark that this isn’t the Deep South, I have a good chuckle.

It’s his NAME for godsake!! They used call President Nixon “Richard Milhouse Nixon” all the freaking time. Hell if I had a name like Barak Hussien Obama I would have changed it to something else along time ago if it was politically expedient…..Hell Barry changes his mind and throws people under the bus all the time when it suits his political goals. Nothing new for the Messia, it’s part of his make up.
Yeah, if you can’t understand the difference, I’m not going to be able to explain it to you.
It’s his NAME for godsake!!
Quick, without looking, what’s John McCain’s middle name? Sarah Palin’s? Joe Biden’s? John Kerry’s? Al Gore’s? Bob Dole’s?
I’ve been through quite a number of presidential elections, and I’ve never seen a party go to so much trouble to emphasize the opposing candidate’s middle name.
They used call President Nixon “Richard Milhouse Nixon” all the freaking time.
We know what Nixon’s was, and Clinton’s and of course W’s, because they actually got elected and we heard them pronounce their middle names at their Inauguration (But does anyone remember Carter’s, or Ford’s?). And I am most definitely looking forward to Inauguration Day 2009, when the sound of “I, Barack Hussein Obama, do solemnly swear” will be met with the sound of wingnut heads exploding all over the land…
I hear the tourists with class will be bypassing the Ft. Myers area this year. Let Sheriff Mike Scott exercise his first amendment rights, And may all the tourists with any ounce of class spend their money elsewhere.
Y’all down there are cutting off your racist noses to spite your faces.

Not everyone in Lee County is a racist. This county is getting a lot of attention from the Obama campaign because there’s a very good chance it will go blue this election. This area does have really awful taste in sheriffs.
