So it’s been over a week since I last posted, mostly because I knew that after Brandy and acallidryas offered their thoughts I should put up some kind of election reaction and words were failing me. As I mentioned last night, Democratic senatorial candidate Mark Begich is now ahead of convicted felon Ted Stevens in the race for the Alaska seat. Pollster David Dittman- a Republican that worked for Stevens’ campaign during the Alaskan primary- doesn’t see positive things in Stevens’ near future:
“I don’t think Stevens can come back,” Dittman said, noting that he thinks the remaining trove of uncounted ballots will help Begich “increase his lead.”
Even if Begich’s advantage grows, however, Dittman believes it’s highly unlikely that Stevens will concede the race until every last ballot …

Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) isn’t one to let a few felonies stand between him and his Senate seat but apparently the citizens of Alaska feel differently. Mark Begich, his Democratic opponent (and mayor of Anchorage), is now ahead by 814 votes with approximately 35,000 ballots left to count within the next week. Begich’s surge forward was created by the counting of 60,000 absentee, questioned and early ballots that leaned towards the Democrat.
