Iceland Fast-tracked (In a Good Way for Once): EU officials say they would fast-track an application from Iceland so that the beleagured nation could be a member as early as 2011. Iceland would be going through the app process beside Croatia (the EU likes to take in countries in pairs). The United Nation’s World Food Programme (WFP) is cutting the rations of maize distributed to Zimbabweans in need due to donations and supplies falling very short of the massive demand. The nation has faced years of crop failures and the upcoming April harvest is expected to be equally unsuccessful. The hyperinflation has left most stores charging U.S. dollars for food since the Zimbabwean currency is worthless. And it is a situation that is expected to get far worse.

Blackwater Worldwide is losing its license to operate as a security firm in Iraq. In September 2007, five Blackwater guards shot and killed seventeen Iraqi civilians. Last November, the U.S. reached an agreement with the Iraqi government that allowed the latter to determine which private security companies could stay in the country. Any Blackwater employees not involved in the shooting are free to join up with another, non-banned company if they would like.
