The first time I ever heard Andrew Bird’s solo work was in an Onion AV Club review of the album Mysterious Production of Eggs. It was the song “A Nervous Tic Motion of the Head” and it was like nothing I had ever heard before. I listened to that one song repeatedly. I made my then-fiance listen to it. Friend of Moue (FoM) Adam became a proud uncle last week and I’ve been looking for an appropriate shop to feature in honor of baby Stan. I’m not fond of many of the indie children clothing companies out there because the goods are rather expensive for something that’s only going to be worn for a relatively short period of time.
But decorations have a much larger shelf life. Fat Cat Designs 6 has lamp-shades and accessories designed to match popular children’s bedding.

Not long ago, RNC Chairman Michael Steele let fly with the fairly unhinged contention that working for the government didn’t count as a “real job”. Well, turns out that Steele’s ridiculous attempt to redefine “employment” wasn’t simply an embarassing gaffe — it’s an actual conservative talking point. The Atlantic’s Megan McArdle, who is to political thought what outer space is to oxygen, got into it with economist Dean Baker the other day and tried this line of thought out on him. Senate Republicans are blocking much needed economic legislation without offering any sound alternatives for the provisions they aren’t happy with. No, you haven’t fallen through a time warp. President Obama signed the stimulus bill into law yesterday and- Wayback machine notwithstanding-it is on its way to action. The Republicans in question are from the California state Senate, the economic legislation is a series of bills relating to the state’s $42 billion budget gap and the situation is getting more dire by the day.
