Indie Retailer of the Day: Typography Mix Bag

I wanted to do a typography mixed bag because I finally saw the documentary Helvetica over the weekend and it was fantastic. If you find typesetting and foreign men talking about modernist principles a bit sexy (or at least interesting) I highly recommend it. I’m also debuting a slightly new look for the Indie Retailer spots in this post.

Terrence “Baby Wipes” Howard: Renee of Womanist Musings has a guest post at Shakesville telling off Ebony magazine for including actor Terrence Howard on the cover as a “Renaissance Man”. To be fair, if it is a “men with serious control issues who threaten to kill their daughter’s boyfriend, refer to her abstinence in creepy ways, beat their ex wives and say women aren’t clean unless they use baby wipes after urinating” renaissance, Ebony totally got this one right.

In my post about the inappropriate (and illegal) release of Rhianna’s evidentiary photo, I worried that the prominant display of the image on the front page of the website for a national news publication like the Chicago Sun Times could be triggering for abuse victims who would not be expecting to see such a thing there. A commenter disagreed with this, saying that abuse victims that could be triggered by such an image are in need of psychological help and that “signs of violence are all thru our media and day to day life , why should it be an issue for a tabloid to publish a violent image?”
