“Stress Tests” Need More Stress

Calculated Risk has two charts that make it clear that the Stress Tests being carried out are working under rather optimistic forecasts for the future. There’s a chart each for GDP and unemployment that compare the “more adverse” (worst case) scenario projections defined by the Stress Tests with those of the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD). The results suggest that the “more adverse” figures are closer to the baseline (actual) scenario than what the Administration is betting. As Matthew Yglesias notes, these miscalculations may cause banks to pass the tests that aren’t really up to par.
