Progress Stumbles: The New Hampshire state House did not pass marriage equality legislation.
The House passed legislation today that will crack down on the unscrupulous practices of credit card companies. But tucked within that same legislation was an amendment, added by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), that would allow people to carry loaded and concealed firearms in national parks. The House allowed a split vote so that those who wished to go on record as being against the gun law could do so but that section passed 279-147. The Democratic breakdown (roll call here) was 105 yea, 145 nay. The Senate got gun friendly on Tuesday with a 67-29 vote that included 27 Democrats in the “pro” column.
A GITMO related gem from Senate Majority Leader Dirty Harry, starring as The King of Paradoxes:
The Senate voted 90-6 today to remove from a spending bill the $80 million that was intended to finance the closure of Guantanamo by January of next year. Republicans have been hitting the media hard in protest of the planned closure, objecting to the lack of concrete relocation destination for the detainees and throwing up a variety of weak defenses as to why they can’t be housed here. And the Senate Democrats– who manage to embody a combination of the Lion, Scarecrow and Tin Man, pre-op– bent to the Republican line of thinking.
