So I discovered the art of “Vintage by Crystal” at the SOWA Open Markets in Boston this past Sunday.
Naked People, a project by photographer Sebastian Kempa includes twenty photos of people dressed in their ordinary clothing. Next to each picture is their name and some basic information about the model. When you click on the model’s body, their clothing fades away and reveals their nude body, positioned just as it had been in the clothed version.
Justine Lai has created a series of paintings that portray her having (often very graphic) sex with each of the Presidents of the United States. The series, entitled “Join or Die” comes with this artist’s statement:
The Location:
Lubumbashi, the second largest city in the Democratic Republic of Congo, has served as the backdrop for many of the region’s genocidal civil war actions. The city has hundreds of street children and NGO’s like the Bakanja Centre exist to provide them with food, clothing and a place to sleep.
Just a brief item… The absolutely epic BSG, of which I’m a bit of a fanboy, is coming to a close. Of course, this calls for U.N.recognition.
I haven’t been working on my design projects the last few weekends so it slipped my mind to do a design resource roundup. But people seem to like these (and hopefully find them useful) so here are some grunge style Photoshop brushes. GIMP users can use these too- you just drop the files for the brushes in the “Brushes” folder in your GIMP directory. I’ve indicated how many brushes are included in each set and, when the information was provided, whether they can be used commercially.
It is obvious from Anthony Lane’s review of the film version of Watchmen that he had decided he was above it all before the movie started. He spends the review side-stepping points and assuming that everyone he’s trying to wink at and nudge is actually in his corner.
I was going through my Google Reader yesterday when I saw a post at Art News Blog about a forthcoming installation at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York. Artist Chu Yun plans to have women sleeping in beds around the gallery space.”That’s interesting,” I thought. Watching someone sleep is a fairly intimate thing since that person is fairly vulnerable. There’s also a culturally ingrained habit of being cautious around a sleeping person lest you wake them. The installation had the chance of being an interesting, living testament to these ideas.
Reminiscent of the Strokes’ early days, Spoon, or even Weezer, Swiss band Choo Choo harnesses the raw power of 60’s pop rock and turns it into what they call “steam powered garage rock.” The extra steam billows from their organist, Lili, cutting through the distorted guitar crunching to bring out melodic lines that are easy to hum along with. When the organ lines aren’t catchy, they outline chords to add that extra flare. Lead guitarist and vocalist, Dan, embodies the typical power-chord pounding and slacked singing one can expect from a garage rock band. Yan and Sam, bass and drums/backup vocals, keep things nice and tight, shoveling in the coal that keeps this stream train rolling.
