Indie Retailer of the Day: Amy Perrotti

Art, Indie Retailers 23 June 2009 | 3 Comments

Amy Perrotti’s art is bright, bold and often cheerful. There’s also a slight kitsch factor via the inclusion of subjects like Russian dolls. The prints would be great for rooms with a lot of sunlight or a place where you’re likely to be stressed.

So I discovered the art of “Vintage by Crystal” at the SOWA Open Markets in Boston this past Sunday.

Indie Retailer Review: The Bath Project

Bath and Body, Indie Retailers 8 June 2009 | 0 Comments

I was lucky enough to receive two products from The Bath Project to review: the Ice Cream Party Sugar Body Scrub and the Ice Cream Party Shea Stick. The two products share a similar scent that is described by the manufacturer as being vanilla ice cream mixed with sugar cone but reminded me more of vanilla cake with frosting (which isn’t a bad thing).

NR’s Bizarre Sotomayor Cover

Bigotry requires a certain level of cognitive dissonance among its practitioners. There needs to be a series of blind spots in place if someone is going to believe wholly in racial stereotypes that are very easily disproved. So it isn’t surprising when an act of bigotry is illogical. Take, for example, the National Review’s cover featuring SCOTUS nominee Sonia Sotomayor.

Chart of the Day: Unemployment Rate and Level of Education

Art, Economy, Society & World 8 June 2009 | 0 Comments

I received my acceptance letter from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst last week to finish my Bachelor’s degree in Journalism (my original major was Biochemistry — long story behind the switch). I’m still figuring out how I’m going to provide the $300 per credit hour and trying to convince myself that it will be worth it in the long run. This chart from Calculated Risk showing the unemployment rate based on level of education makes me feel slightly better about my forthcoming loan debt:

Indie Retailer of the Day: Branch Handmade

Apparel, Headline, Home Decor, Indie Retailers 26 May 2009 | 1 Comment

Branch Handmade has clothing, pillowcases and towels screenprinted with fantastic, vintage stock photo inspired graphics. The pillowcases do not come with the pillows inside- which I actually consider a positive since it is harder to find cute cases than it is covered pillows.

Indie Retailer of the Day: Recipe Card Mix Bag

Featured, Indie Retailers, Mix Bag 25 May 2009 | 0 Comments

Although I cook often, my recipes are usually jotted down on scrap pieces of paper and slipped inside a notebook. I do love the idea of recipe cards but I’m a bit of a perfectionist and get frustrated when I run out of cards and there’s no way to buy matching replacement cards. That’s why these printable recipe cards appeal to me. You pay the (roughly) $5 and get a PDF file in the email that lets you print off as many recipe cards (or divider tabs or shopping lists) that you’d like.

Indie Retailer of the Day: Loser Pet Shop

Art, Featured, Indie Retailers 18 May 2009 | 3 Comments

The art from Loser Pet Shop allows you to root for the underdog. Well, there’s not actually a dog but there is a seasick goldfish, night blind owl and frog that fears the undead. All the prints are 8″ x 10″ and cost $20.00, though the cat and frog are also available in a 5″ x 7″ size for $12.00.

Indie Retailer of the Day: CopperLilly Botanicals

Bath and Body, Featured, Indie Retailers 15 May 2009 | 0 Comments

CopperLilly Botanicals sells sterling silver jewelry and soaps but the latter were so beautiful I decided to make them my focus. The ingredients of the soaps are top notch and the appearance worthy of display.
