So the main thing to keep in mind while looking at these creations from The Builder’s Studio is their size and that they are completely made of wood, painted with shiny metallics in order to resemble odd metals.  The talent involved is mind boggling, and the vision is sufficiently unique that I wish there were novels or comics to go with each one.

I stumbled upon this etsy shop courtesy of a lovely flickr page, and voila, Dilkabear is on the radar. Quirky almost-caricatures of interesting women.  Check them out.

I’m a little unclear whether this technically qualifies as “indie,” but since this is a storybook/toy project that arose from a tiny art show, I’m going to err on the side of rags to riches at worst.  Andi Green designed these “WorryWoo Monsters” originally in 2001 for an exhibition called “Monsters in My Head” and then went on to create storybooks and plush toys for each.  My favorite is here but everyone is sold out.

So I discovered Beyond Blue Nudes II while idling looking at different prints on etsy.  I was drawn in general to the strong lines and the varied colours but also more specifically to the both sensual and everyday quality to her images.  I ended up buying one, similar to the bottom print below.  The two shown here relate to the beach would make a great gift set.  Th

While I’m still on my deviantART kick, I just bought the top print here for my friends who are expecting a little one soon.  Maria Jose Da Luz’s work is pretty diverse:  dreamy surreal pastels, angelic cartoon work and hyperrealistic fables can all be found here.  As I said yesterday, prints from deviantART can be printed at different size, in matte, glossy or canvas.

The photography of Lara Jade first caught my eye while scanning the prints available to purchase at deviantART.  The majority of her work is in portraiture, which is often a difficult subject matter to sell.  After all, most folks don’t want people they don’t know on their wall.  So to sell portraiture, artists often lend an anonymity or a vulnerability to the photo that the viewer can put themselves into, and that’s something that Lara Jade does quite well.  The print with the strawberry is noteworthy in that she reports that photoshop and similar effects were used for the colouring but not for the concept - the actual shot is courtesy of trial and error, not digital artistry.  Prints from deviantART have different costs depending on their size, which allows you to pick a piece that fits your wall as well as your wallet.

The photography of Elle Moss has a bizarre effect on me.  I want to stock a creepy little house on the end of a lane with her pictures and order something from UPS that needs a signature, so that when the delivery person arrives the door is cracked open and I get to follow them through the house peering at these unusual prints in the search for the missing resident.  And then when I was bored I’d jump out wearing a horse-mask and say boo.

Between her etsy shop and her personal blog, you can get an idea of the breadth of Ms. Havens’ figure drawing. From teaching classes, she has numerous original pieces that run the gamut from inexpensive to indulgent, but she also sells affordable prints. Additionally, from now until November 21st, buy a print as a gift and get a second for yourself.

Jennifer Squires Photography

Last featured: April 24, 2008

I initially featured Jennifer Squires’ photography because I was attracted to the stark simplicity of many of her images. This feeling carries on to her latest work, where she also manages to make me insanely envious of her travels through Greece. I wanna travel ::pout:: Ignore my tantrum and enjoy the photos.

Woodburned pieces speak of a kind of craftmanship you don’t always see nowadays, and the work at Sixth & Elm is carefully crafted both as a general product but also for custom orders.  Its hard to think of a phrase that signifies quality moer than “custom-woodburned” right?  Her non-custom work itself bears the strong stamp of elegance without being pretentious.
