Although I cook often, my recipes are usually jotted down on scrap pieces of paper and slipped inside a notebook. I do love the idea of recipe cards but I’m a bit of a perfectionist and get frustrated when I run out of cards and there’s no way to buy matching replacement cards. That’s why these printable recipe cards appeal to me. You pay the (roughly) $5 and get a PDF file in the email that lets you print off as many recipe cards (or divider tabs or shopping lists) that you’d like.

I didn’t try sushi until I was in my early 20s even though my friends were going out for it regularly when we were younger. I took a firm stance against it because of the rawness and begrudgingly went with my friend Amber when she insisted for the 500th time that I would really like it if I tried it. I started slowly with a California Roll but since I am an epic food stealer, I also tried a piece of Amber’s fishy roll. And she was right. I really liked it when I tried it. And now I’m craving some, so you all get this post. Circle of life.

The site’s technical issues are officially resolved and we’ll be back full force next week. For now, a follow-up to a popular Indie Mix Bag I did recently that featured products related to slasher films. I cheated a bit here because I’m not sure how indie the company that makes the Crystal Lake shirt really is, but it is awesome. So there.

I’ll be optimistic and say that the site’s tech issues are close to being resolved. They may have been cleared up faster had they not occurred during a week that was already very busy and chaotic, what with the day job and the taxes and the Republicans and their teabagging. Since I’ve spent the past few days wishing I had a clone or, at minimum, spare arms, here is a Mix Bag full of octopi.

I wanted to do a typography mixed bag because I finally saw the documentary Helvetica over the weekend and it was fantastic. If you find typesetting and foreign men talking about modernist principles a bit sexy (or at least interesting) I highly recommend it. I’m also debuting a slightly new look for the Indie Retailer spots in this post.

As I mentioned in the comments of Acallidryas’ post about the old school video game wallpapers, I put up the Super Mario one and was forced to clean up my desktop so that I could see it. My desktop is now the most organized it has ever been. Here’s a Mix Bag to thank the little guy (and his associates).

I saw the new Friday the 13th over the weekend and thought it was decent enough. I’ve never been a huge fan of the series (but I have, admittedly, seen them all) so my expectations were pretty low. There were a couple of interesting updates to the film- one being an explanation for how Jason can seem to pop up in front of someone he’d been casually walking yards behind moments before. But I won’t be watching it again anytime soon or buying the DVD. (Cont…)

Yes, it is a bit early but with shipping dates accounted for I thought now was a good time to put up a Valentine’s Day themed Indie Retailer post. The holiday is named for two Saint’s named Valentine that were honored on February 14th by the Catholic Church. Neither saint had associations with love, romance or chalky, message-bearing candy.
