Submission Guidelines
We’re looking to walk the tightrope between the serious issues of the world that need to be acknowledged and recognized and the frivolity we need to have in our lives to balance the weight of those things. With that in mind, we’re looking to combine hard-hitting, thoughtful pieces on politics and society with visual spreads featuring the best in independent shopping and interviews with independent musicians/artists/writers/etc. .
Each bimonthly issue will have a theme. Upcoming themes will be posted on this page as the titles and dates become known. We welcome the submission of feature length (2000-4000 words) non-fiction pieces in the form of articles, essays or whatever else may suit your fancy. We prefer the factual rather than personal but understand that the line between can be blurry. We will also accept shorter (under 2000 words) non-fiction pieces such as reviews, interviews, personal experiences and “mixed bag” type compilations. The only fiction we are prepared to accept at this time is flash fiction (750 words or less). No poetry, please. Really.
Submissions must be original (not printed previously). With your submission, you agree to give Moue Magazine the exclusive first Electronic Publishing Rights for 60 days. Basically, we’re just asking that you not sell the same article to another source for the two months the issue is current. After that, ownership reverts totally to the writer though the older issue will remain on our site in the archives. Simultaneous submissions are welcome as long as we are informed if the article is accepted elsewhere first.
The Details:
Features (2,000-4,000 words): $40
Interviews, reviews and other shorter non-fiction pieces: $20
Photo feature (8-10 themed photos): $40
Flash Fiction: $20
Upcoming Issues
“No Money, ‘Mo Problems”-The Poverty Issue
The world economy is bleeding. There’s a global food crisis. Natural disasters are putting impossible strains on already suffering areas. Food banks in the United States are running short on supplies. The unemployment rate continues to rise. Things need to change and they need to change fast.
We’re looking for articles that reflect on the path that led us here or chart the course of escape, portraits of those being hit hardest by poverty and ruminations on what the world will look like in the future if this descent continues. Art reflects the society around it so reviews and analysis of artistic products are welcome as well as photographs that capture this unfortunate moment in time.
Send queries or full pieces to submissions@mouemagazine.com by December 15th. Please include in the subject line the name of the category your piece would be listed in (ex: Features).
For an idea of the style of feature articles we’re looking for, check out Bad Subjects and In the Fray .
