Lemonbird Homemade Jams
Last featured: May 12, 2008
I mentioned in my original Lemonbird feature that I come from a family that’s big on canning so homemade jam is an area in which I’ve done considerable amounts of taste testing. While my family tends to stick to the traditional (not a bad thing, necessarily), Lemonbird caught my attention because they make some really interesting flavor choices that would make their jams a more usable product than the store bought jams that are mostly for PB &#38; J sandwiches or toast.

<p>I mentioned in my original Lemonbird feature that I come from a family that’s big on canning so homemade jam is an area in which I’ve done considerable amounts of taste testing. While my family tends to stick to the traditional (not a bad thing, necessarily), Lemonbird caught my attention because they make some really interesting flavor choices that would make their jams a more usable product than the store bought jams that are mostly for PB &amp; J sandwiches or toast.</p>
<p>I’m not a big fan of grapefruit but this jam that combines them with jalapeños and candied ginger intrigues me because it is reminiscent on the fruit based salsas used often on seafood (or, my favorite, black bean and plantain burgers).</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/lemon2grapjal.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-2126" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/08/lemon2grapjal.jpg?w=300&amp;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>

<p><span id="more-224"></span></p>
<p>I have never eaten roses but know that many flowers are indeed edible and tasty. Lemonbird recommends serving this jam over white cheese or chocolate cake.</p>

I come from a family where homemade jam is fairly easy to come by since some relative is always in the process of canning. Because of that, I tend to be pretty harsh on store bought jams since they… tend to be grossly inferior gelatinous globs of fruit. But I have high hopes for Lemon Bird’s Homemade Jams.  They create jams in the French tradition using seasonal ingredients that they purchase from the local farmer’s market. <p>I come from a family where homemade jam is fairly easy to come by since some relative is always in the process of canning. Because of that, I tend to be pretty harsh on store bought jams since they… tend to be grossly inferior gelatinous globs of fruit. But I have high hopes for <a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=5068581">Lemon Bird’s Homemade Jams</a>.  They create jams in the French tradition using seasonal ingredients that they purchase from the local farmer’s market. As you’ll see below, the flavors range from the sweet to the savory.</p>
<p>I selected this first jam with Acallidryas in mind. I’m not sure where she stands on oranges but I know that dark chocolate and cardamom are favored flavors.</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemondark.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-981" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemondark.jpg?w=297&amp;h=300" alt="" width="297" height="300" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11705621">Orange and Dark Chocolate with Cardamom Jam</a>, $6.00</p>
<p><span id="more-351"></span></p>
<p>There are only three jars of this next seasonal jam left. It features apples and candied pecans in caramel so it isn’t hard to see why.</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemoncandy.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-982" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemoncandy.jpg?w=300&amp;h=209" alt="" width="300" height="209" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11629214">Candy Apple Crunch Jam</a>, $5.50</p>
<p>Also keep it sweet and textured is the following blood orange jam that has candied pieces of the fruit mixed inside.</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemonblood.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-983" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemonblood.jpg?w=300&amp;h=199" alt="" width="300" height="199" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11645615">Blood Orange Jam</a>, $5.50</p>
<p>But we’ll round off the post with a couple of jams that are more left of center.</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemontomat.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-984" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemontomat.jpg?w=300&amp;h=280" alt="" width="300" height="280" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=11702284">Tomato with Madagascar Vanilla Beans</a>, $6.00</p>
<p><a href="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemonpeppers.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-985" src="http://mouemagazine.files.wordpress.com/2008/05/lemonpeppers.jpg?w=300&amp;h=221" alt="" width="300" height="221" /></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=8389198">Peppers with Balsamic Vinegar Jam</a>, $5.00</div>
